Meet the characters of Mira, Royal Detective, which will be debuting this Spring season on Disney Junior. The series as already been renewed for a second season, so it’s sure to be a hit.
It’s a star-packed South Asian cast for this series and I love it! So often, South Asian (ethnic) roles go to people of other cultural groups because they fit the role’s aesthetic. Seeing the ode to India brought to life by Indian’s is indeed a win.
The cast includes: Leela Ladnier, Freida Pinto, Kal Penn, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Hannah Simone, Jameela Jamil and Aasif Mandvi lead the cast, along with Sarita Choudhury, Aparna Nancherla, Kamran Lucas, Karan Brar, Karan Soni. Pinto traversed the modeling circuit in Mumbai (represented by Elite Model Management India) for two years before gaining her big break when director Danny Boyle picked her out in the audition process to play the female lead, Latika, for his project Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Kal Penn is Mikku, a mongoose sidekick. Kal Penn was born and raised in Montclair, New Jersey. He began his acting career in several indie films. His breakthrough film role came in the comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004). He went on to appear for 2 years in the television series House (2004). Hannah Simone is voicing Pinky, who plays a commoner.Hannah Simone stars on FOX’s hit series, New Girl (2011), opposite Zooey Deschanel. Simone hosted HGTV Canada’s popular design show, “Space for Living”, before moving onto Canada’s largest music channel, “MuchMusic”. Jameela Jamil is Mira’s Aunty Pushpa. Jameela Jamil is an English born actress, writer, DJ, model and radio host. She made history as the first woman in its 60 years on air, to host the Official Chart on the esteemed radio station BBC Radio 1. She left to pursue a writing career in the United States. After signing as a comedy writer at 3ARTS and being taken on by UTA, she was sent to audition for Michael Schur‘s latest project on NBC, The Good Place (2016), to star opposite Ted Danson and Kristen Bell.
