Chai Chenak Brings Pakistan’s Flavors to New Jersey

Chai Chenak, loosely translated to tea pot, is a Pakistani food experience in the middle of downtown New Brunswick in the midst of other ethnic restaurants and Rutgers University. What makes it unique is its authentic Pakistani menu and imported Pakistani handicrafts.

Pakistani food is not of my expertise, let alone Pakistani street food. For this outing, my Karachi-born husband was my voice of review and reason. Over a few trips to Chai Chenak, we have had a good sampling of their snacks, curries, and, of course, chai.

Food

Hubby was most excited to try the Karachi style bun kebab; he prefers the dal to the chicken and continues to order this on each visit. I’ve had the chicken tikka club sandwich; I find the meat can get dry and there is far too much of it. The chaats are good, the main difference being the special aloo chat is warm and the aloo papri chat is cold.

Of the paratha rolls we have tried, the chicken garlic mayo is a consistent winner, everyone loves these guys. Another sure winner is the Qeema paratha which transported my husband back to Pakistan in the early 90’s, that’s how authentic and good it was.

The karhais and handis are also delicious, unique as they embody Balochi spice compositions. Another honorable mention…masala curly fries (enough said).

Chai

On the final note, let’s talk chai. I am a masala tea drinker while my husband is a doodh patti fan. First disappointing thing is that we used to get 2 cups worth of chai in one chenak, but now they’ve cut the amount of chai in half. When you get 2 cups of tea per chenak, it truly was a drink that kept giving, now it’s just for the ‘gram. The biscuit on the side is yummy, so ordering a tea is not a disappointment by any means. We were both satisfied with our chais and I love a good IG boomerang.

Chai Chenak in Review

Aesthetically, Chai Chenak is a visual treat. Walls are covered in murals and posters of notable music figures, tables and dinner wear are colorful and ethnic, and every corner is set-up for a quick snap.

If you take a trip to New Brunswick to experience Chai Chenak, anticipate dinner rushes, Coke Studio sounds, and a warm cup of tea.
